Food For Thought!!

Covid times have re-emphasized the importance of diet. We are all eating nutritious food, & are very conscious of eating a good amount of fruits & vegetables, consuming proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins & minerals in the right proportions. We are being very careful while buying food items, checking out their nutritional values to maintain a healthy body & improve our immunity.

However, the food we eat contains many essential nutrients along with their own subtle (non-physical) vibrations or types of energies. Food not only feeds the body but the mind as well. The vibrations of the food we eat influence our mind, which in turn affects our thoughts, attitudes & behavior.

“Ahar tat, tvam asi” and “Jaisa ann, vaisa man” are old beliefs in Indian culture. This means- You are what you eat. Indian scriptures say that the food we eat plays a very important role in the way we think, feel, react & behave. It reflects in our personality. According to Indian scriptures, food can be classified into three categories, according to the energy that exists in them. These are:

Satvik or Sentient food– this type of food has vibrations of purity, love, peace & joy. These include fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, grains, milk & dairy products. Hence this type of food is eaten during fast or religious festivals like Navratri.

Rajsic or Mutative Food– this type of food contains the energy of restlessness & change. It may make the body agitated & nervous. These include caffeinated drinks, hot spices, fermented food, etc.

Tamasic or Static food– this type of food contains the energy of heaviness, fear, depression & insecurity. Some examples are fast food, processed food, alcohol  & non-vegetarian food.  In Indian tradition, alcohol & non-vegetarian food is usually avoided in religious festivals. This is done to keep our minds powerful & peaceful.

Just as we saw that food affects thoughts, similarly the vice–versa is also true. Our thoughts also greatly influence the food we are eating. Have you ever wondered why the food cooked by your mother tastes so good, even better than a five-star hotel? Similarly, a simple meal at a gurudwara also is so delicious. In all three cases, the motive & the thoughts while cooking the meal are different. A mother cooks with a lot of love, whereas in a restaurant, food is cooked for profit. In a religious place, the meal is prepared for offering & serving God & hence contains a different type of energy. Thus, the thoughts & feelings of the person who is cooking are extremely important. The state of mind in which food is cooked has an impact on the health of those who are eating it. If the person who is cooking is upset, anxious or angry, he is also serving these emotions on a platter, along with the food. So while cooking meals at our home, one should be in a happy & elated state of mind. Your favorite music can be played while cooking or even chanting can be done. Thus a little attention, love & care while cooking will go a long way in creating a powerful state of mind for your loved ones.

Besides the person who is cooking, the mental state of the person who is eating it is equally important. Nowadays, most of us are eating while watching television. The news channels are constantly flashing scenes of violence, crimes & tragedies. Even the daily TV serials are full of negative emotions. Eating with such emotions gives negative energy to the food & the food doesn’t nourish the mind & body so well. This also has an impact on the digestion of food, which in turn gives rise to disorders like acidity, diarrhea & constipation. Besides, many psychosomatic diseases like diabetes, blood pressure may also occur because of this.

Therefore, food must be eaten in a relaxed & cheerful environment & while focusing on food. We can have thoughts of gratitude & eat with the awareness that each morsel is nourishing & energizing our mind & body. These types of thoughts also have a beneficial effect on the molecular structure of water & hence food, as food contains a lot of water. Religion & saints have known this for a long & now even scientists have proved it.

Masaru Emoto was a Japanese scientist who studied the molecular structure of water. He studied the impact of human emotions on water. His research showed that the molecular structure of water changed when exposed to different emotions like love, hate, etc. When given thoughts of love, water formed distinct, beautiful, symmetrical crystals & on being given negative thoughts, disruptive, asymmetrical patterns formed. Hence we need to be more aware of our thoughts as even our body is 70% water.

love

hate

It is also a known fact that plants grow better & faster if they are watered with love & if we talk to them. You must have noticed the difference between a garden watered by the owner itself & that by a gardener. This shows how much plants, which constitute our food, are affected by thoughts.

So it is time we realize the power & effect of our thoughts on food. Paying a little attention to what we eat & how we eat will not only keep our bodies fit but also create a positive & peaceful state of mind. So friends, be aware of what is cooking in the pot of your mind!
